A delightful succulent hybridized by Kevin Vaughn. Powered Pastry is a drought resistant plant that can add bold color to your garden effortlessly. Here are some details about this lovely plant:
-
Description:
- The Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry™ Hens and Chicks features thick, fleshy leaves that grow in a rosette shape.
- Blooms are pink and bloom summer through fall
- Its bicolor foliage starts green near the base of the rosette and transitions abruptly to a bold burgundy color.
- Cobweb-like hairs grow on the foliage tips, adding depth and interest to its appearance.
- This succulent is versatile and can be used as ground cover, featured in borders, rock gardens, or tucked into gaps in stone walls for a burst of color and greenery.
- Foragers typically leave these plants alone, allowing you to enjoy their dependable color.
- It’s hardy and can handle both the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
- Mature Height: 2 - 3 inches
- Mature Spread: Up to 12 inches wide
-
Growing Conditions:
- Plant in full sun to part shade; it tends to grow larger in full sun.
- These succulents are drought-tolerant, so water only when the soil dries out.
- Use a dry potting mix with plenty of perlite for good drainage.
- Fertilizing isn’t mandatory, as Sempervivum plants are not heavy feeders.
- After blooming, they send out stolons with new chicks. Remove the hens as they decline to make space for new chicks to grow and thrive.
-
Spacing:
- Space the Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks about 12 inches apart to create a mat-like appearance.

- It’s a perennial suitable for zones 3 through 8.
