Product Description

Sempervivum Pekinese Hens and Chicks 4 inch pot.
Among the easiest plants to grow, Hen-and-chicks tolerate heat, drought and neglect with style. Useful in rock gardens, container garden of all types, rooftop gardens and rock walls. Hundreds of varieties exist. All types form a low cushion or carpet of fleshy leaves, tiny new plants appearing in a circle around the mother in the middle. This selection has medium-sized rosettes packed with rings of light-green leaves, lightly cobwebbed with silver hairs. Short spikes of pastel flowers appear in summer. Easily increased by just removing the small baby rosettes and replanting in a new location at almost any time. After flowering, the mother rosette dies to leave room for the chicks: remove this by tugging gently at the base of the bloom stem.

Hens Chicks need plenty of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons. These chicks can be left to form tidy clusters or removed to share and transplant.

Sempervivum do most of their growing in the spring and summer, and will thrive with weekly watering. They are incredibly frost hardy and will happily overwinter under a blanket of snow.
They will change color throughout the year. See the pictures above for color changes based on temperature. USDA Zone: 2-9

Full, brilliant color, and now it’s blooming. The succulent was packaged with moist wrapping and enough cushion that there was absolutely no damage from the post. Very pleased!
