Jovibarbas look and act almost just like Sempervivums, but they're actually a different type of succulent. While they have a similar appearance and share a common name, they reproduce quite differently and produce distinctive flowers. Just like Sempervivum Hens and Chicks, Jovibarba care is simple and easy. Both need sunny, dry locations and produce singular rosettes with blushed leaves. However, while Sempervivum puts out flowers that are star-shaped in tones of pink, white, or yellow the Jovibarba hens and chicks develop yellow bell-shaped blooms. Sempervivum produces chicks on stolons which slowly spread out from the hen. Jovibarba can reproduce both with pups on stolons or amongst the leaves. And unlike Sempervivum chicks, these stems, which attach the chicks to the mother plant (or hen), become brittle and dry with age. The chicks then easily detach from the parent, get blown or moved away, and root in a totally new site. This gives Jovibarba species the name "rollers" due to the chicks' ability to roll away from the hen.
Jovibarba (meaning 'beard of Jupiter') High Tatra Perennial. Hens Chicks need plenty of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons. These chicks can be left to form tidy clusters or removed to share and transplant. Zone 3-8. Ships semi-bare root. Sometimes these plants are called "rollers" the chicks form clusters on top of one another and sometimes they roll off the plant and root themselves away from the original plant. Hence the nickname, rollers. Very cute plant with great red color. Well rooted plant shipped in a 4" pot.
