This lovely, aromatic mint herb with many fantastic culinary, medicinal and decorative properties.
Europeans introduced this member of the mint family to America where it has been embraced as a garden plant including many cultivars. Reaching about 2 feet (.60 m.) at maturity, apple mint plants have woolly stems, fragrant serrated leaves and terminal spikes that bear white or light pink flowers beginning in late summer or early fall. How to Grow an Apple Mint Herb Apple mint, known endearingly by some as the fuzzy mint or woolly mint, can be planted from seed or plant and it propagates easily by cuttings. Since apple mint can be aggressive, taking over the garden, it is wise to consider confining the plants to a container. You can put the plant in a container and then bury the container or use it as a nice patio plant. It also does well in a sunny window. Rich soil that drains well and has a pH of 6.0. to 7.0 is best. If spreading is not an issue, you can plant directly into the ground. This mint likes part shade to part sun locations and is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 through 9. Wonderful for tea, iced or hot.
We use organic seed, organic potting soil and organic fertilizer for all our herbs.
Like all mints it is perennial and spreads by runners, so plant where it cannot invade other plants, or give its large container of it's own.
It grows well in most situations - sun or shade, but needs good moist soil to grow well and produce lots of lush green foliage. It's strawberry scented leaves are topped by spires of lilac flowers in the summer which are very popular with bees.
The finely chopped leaves can be added to many fruity desserts and also soft cheeses to give a sweet/savory lift of flavors.
Whole sprigs or chopped leaves make fabulous tea. Use 1 tablespoon per cup of chopped mint and either serve hot, or iced with a fresh sprig added after chilling.
3.5 inch pot.
