Let’s explore Sempervivum ‘Leneca’, a houseleek from the limestone ranges of Europe, it's a delightful succulent that’s sure to capture your gardening heart.

  • Description: Sempervivum ‘Leneca’ displays shiny red rosettes of succulent leaves edged in a fine, silvery fringe. The color shifts from a gorgeous raspberry red to a deep maroon color, often showing hints of green. It forms colonies by offsets, creating a beautiful patch of succulent bliss.

  • Growth Habit: This hardy succulent grows in a clumping, low habit, making it perfect for rock gardens, containers, and even small crevices or spaces with limited soil.

  • Monocarpic Nature: Sempervivum, commonly known as “Hens & Chicks,” are fascinating because they’re monocarpic. The mother plant (the “Hen”) will send out babies (the “Chicks”) to quickly multiply and create a lovely succulent patch. After blooming, the mother plant will expire, but the chicks will fill in the space left behind.

  • Ideal Conditions:

    • Sunlight: Sempervivum ‘Leneca’ prefers full sun to filtered/partial sun.
    • Soil: Well-drained, gravelly soil is essential. Avoid wet feet in winter to prevent rot.
    • Water: Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and doesn’t need much water.
    • Hardiness Zones: Suitable for Zones 4 to 9.
    • Colors: The foliage transitions from green/lime to purple/black and deep red/burgundy.
  • Attractive Features: ‘Leneca’ boasts large, moody-red rosettes covered with a light fuzz. In summer, it produces white flowers that attract bees.
