"Magnificum" Succulent Purple Hen & Chicks Sempervivum Plant 4" Pot

Sempervivum Magnificum, commonly known as “Purple Hen and Chicks,” is a delightful succulent that belongs to the Crassulaceae family from the mountainous regions of Europe. 

1. Appearance:

   • Rosettes: Sempervivum magnificum forms tight, symmetrical rosettes composed of thick, fleshy leaves.
   • Leaf Color: The leaves are typically a striking shade of purple or reddish-purple, although the color intensity can vary based on factors like sunlight exposure and soil conditions.
   • Texture: The leaves have a waxy coating (known as farina) that provides protection against excessive moisture loss.

2. Growth Habit:

   • Size: These rosettes can reach a diameter of up to 6 inches (15 cm).
   • Offsets: As the plant matures, it produces offsets (also called “chicks”) around the base of the main rosette. These offsets eventually form a lovely clump.

   • Cold Tolerance: Sempervivum magnificum is cold-hardy and can withstand freezing temperatures.
   • Sunlight: It thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial.
