Sempervivum 'Peggy' Hens & Chicks, 4" Pot Live Plant
Sempervivum 'Peggy' Hens & Chicks, 4" Pot Live Plant
Sempervivum ‘Peggy’ (also known as Hens and Chicks) is a delightful mat-forming succulent perennial. Here are some key details about it:
- Appearance: The evergreen rosettes of Sempervivum ‘Peggy’ change color throughout the seasons. In spring, the leaves are purple, transitioning to deep red in summer. Fall and winter colors are more subdued, ranging from mahogany to brown.
- Flowering: During summer, a thick flowering stalk emerges from the center of the rosette, bearing showy starry pink flowers. Keep in mind that Sempervivums are monocarpic, meaning they die after flowering.
- Growth: It grows up to 4-6 inches tall (10-15 cm) and 6-8 inches wide (15-20 cm). The mother rosette (the “Hen”) produces offsets (the “Chicks”) that spread horizontally to form a colony.
- Care: Sempervivum ‘Peggy’ is drought-tolerant and surprisingly cold-hardy. Plant it in well-drained soil with added grit, in full sun to light shade. Excellent drainage is essential. Protect it from excessive winter wet.
- Uses: These hardy succulents are great for rock gardens, scree beds, troughs, and as groundcover. They’re also deer and rabbit resistant.
