Collection: Beardtongue (Penstemon)
Native to North America this group of plants are related to snapdragons and foxglove. The nickname "beardtongue" refers to the pollen-free stamen that protrudes from the flower resembling a bearded iris.
Penstemons don’t compete well with other plants, so give them plenty of space in the garden. They can grow a bit tall so depending on the breed might be best as back border plants. They love full sun and well-draining soil. They can be a bit drought tolerant but they don't really enjoy it.
They aren't too bothered by insect pests but bees and butterflies love them. Birds appreciate the seeds at the end of the season.
